Rock on: Clark launches concrete recycling company

Mike Clark of Clark Properties started a new venture beyond his real estate development and management services. In February, Clark and partners Tom Barnewolt and Tim Surmeier launched Eco Recycling, a concrete recycling company, on a 27-acre site in Pagedale.

Clark, chief executive of the new venture, said he has been in talks with the Behan family for three years to develop the site of the former Hill-Behan Lumber Co.'s lumber yard in north St. Louis County. The site, which has been idle since 2001, includes 17 vacant buildings.

Clark signed a six-year lease on the property, beginning in January, with a purchase option. Eco Recycling is set to begin receiving demolition concrete and asphalt. The company will begin selling the crushed rock within a month.

Clark estimates it will cost $1.5 million over six years for environmental cleanup, to demolish the structures and to raise the elevation of the site 25 feet to increase its marketability. The partners are using private funds to finance the project. Eco Recycling's strategy is to have the concrete recycling business pay for the costs associated with developing the land. The long-term goal is to develop the site for commercial use, such as light manufacturing or industrial space....
